| Okay Linh, this one's for you
Though
I am compelled to apologize and make excuse for my prolonged absense
from xanga, I will spare you the sad saga of how life is busy, lack of
Internet at home is debilitating, too much academic writing is sapping
what little creativity I have left, one sentence updates on facebook is
so much easier than taking time to compose a decent post on xanga, my
dog ate my homework, etc.
Well, by the grace of God I finally finished my semester last week
Wednesday, 5.16.07, when I submitted my last takehome final, which I
should have turned in a few days before. As difficult as the
semester was for me, I decided I would not graduate but opted for
another year of school instead. Yes, it's been five years now,
and I cannot seem to make the transition out of academia back into the
workforce.
With the end of the semester and the beginning of the wedding season,
I am driving up and down for the next few weekends, and though I shirk at the
inflated gas prices, it's nice to be with family and enjoy my mom's efforts to fatten me up.
Last weekend when I was home, my dad asks me to order him one of
these so he can view his digital pictures (Epson P3000 Multimedia
Storage Viewer):

Of course, I am appalled. Why should he waste his money on
that?!? I desperately try to talk him out of it and tell him to
buy a cheap laptop instead. Mind you, the man has never touched a computer
in his life, let alone a laptop. Well, I convince him, and two
hours later we are driving to the CompUSA in Rockford to pick up his
new Acer Aspire 5610z: a truly historic moment to be remembered forever
in the annals of Kim family history.
When we get home, my dad is eager to enter into the computer age and
try his hand at the Internet for the first time. To my dismay,
teaching him to use a computer is like teaching someone who has never
held a pencil before to write. He can barely manage moving the
cursor with the touchpad or double-clicking on an icon. What had
I gotten myself into? Eventually, he does learn to upload his
pictures and view them, even deleting ones he doesn't like. Next,
we have a mini-lesson on websurfing and email. One of these days
he may be proficient enough to use the email account I set up
for him and write to me. This may increase our
communication and improve our relationship.
Aah, technology.
So much potential for good or bad. For Dad and me, I'm hoping it'll be
for good.

| Massmail from the Chancellor: "All classes have been canceled for Tuesday (Feb. 13) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. More than 5 inches of snow fell overnight, up to another foot of snow is possible by Tuesday night and a blizzard warning is in effect. U. of I. employees who have been designated as essential personnel are expected to report to work."
"All Wednesday (Feb. 14) classes at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign have been cancelled. Continuing high winds and snow have made it impossible to keep streets and sidewalks clear and safe."
The last time U of I cancelled classes was 1979. For those of you who were alive to remember the blizzard of '79, uh-huh... you know what I'm talkin' about. I was eight and Jong Ho was five. The snow drifts by our townhouse were over two stories high, and we spent over an hour trying to climb to the top of one of them. We never made it but still had a blast. Going to Morning Prayer today was an experience. I got up at 4:30, had breakfast, had my quiet time, put on three layers of clothes, covered up my face till only my eyes were showing and headed out. Jinny and I walked to Campus Oaks and drove in Summer's car with Esther and Ariel. We made it to TCBC okay, but then got stuck trying to go up the driveway. Bad idea since nothing was plowed near the church. It took about 10 minutes to get unstuck. A UPS guy pulled over to help us. We were so thankful, especially since about 5-6 other cars just passed us by. Surprisingly, a lot of people made it out for morning prayer, mostly younger guys. I love our crazy church. By the way, HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY!!! The last memorable one, weatherwise, was 1990 when we had the Valentine's Day ice storm in CU. I was a sophomore living at ISR back then. I remember walking to my 8:30am Psych 100 class and marveling at how everything was encased with a sheet of ice. It was beautiful. Today, everything is covered in white with snow. It reminds me of God's grace which covers over our sins and washes us white as snow. May His grace never fall short but cover you each and every day. "Come now, let us reason together," says the LORD. "Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool." (Isaiah 1:18) | | |
| Hello, everyone! Happy New Year!
Sorry for the long absence from xanga. Feels good to be
back. Hope everyone is finding rest in God's goodness and
grace.
Here is a brief update on my 2007 so far:
- Jan. 3-6: Attended my 13th Winter OIL Conference. Excellent! Recommitted myself to God's global mission.
- Jan. 17: Began my 4th semester at Urbana Theological
Seminary. Planning to graduate this May with a Master of Arts in
Religion.
- Jan. 25: Stood in my 8th wedding. Congratulations to Charles and Chunsun Porter!
- Jan. 26: My grandmother went home to be with the Lord at
the age of 86. She was and is and will continue to be one of my
favorite persons in this world and a role model for me to follow.
- Jan. 29: Applied for the one high school ESL teaching
position in all of Champaign-Urbana. The woman who started the
ESL program at Urbana High School is finally retiring after 20+
years. Please pray for me.
- Feb. 2-3: CFC Winter Retreat with Dr. Roy King (Columbia
International University). "What is God Up To in the Human
Heart?" --- breaking my pride in order to develop a heart filled
with faith, hope, and love.
- Feb. 9: Finally getting back to xanga. Hopefully, I will be more faithful this semester.
A Story of Two Dogs
A little boy tells
his grandfather, "I feel like I have two dogs inside me. One is mean and evil
and wants to bite people and hurt them. The other is a nice puppy who just wants
to lick your face and be loved." The
Grandfather says, "Which one do you think will win?" The little boy says, "I guess the one I feed."
